     TOURING IN YOUR MODEL “A”

          By Claude Sipe

To many of us touring in the Model “A” is the most fun of all Model “A” activities! Now I’m sure everyone doesn’t agree that it’s the “best part” of the activity but it sure rates high on most everyone’s list. There are a few things we all should keep in mind whether we are touring solo, with 1 or 2 other Model “A’s,” or a large group. First of all we need to remember not everyone on the road thinks our Model “A’s” are as cute as we do! Be careful you are not a “rock in the stream” of traffic, and be extra cautious, and allow other vehicles to pass. Stay in the right lane on a 4 lane highway unless you are preparing to make a left turn. When traveling on a 2 lane highway use every “turn out” when you have vehicles behind you, even if you only have 1 car behind you. When you are traveling with a group on a 2 lane highway, and you have a vehicle behind you, that is not part of your group, let them by at the first opportunity, it is not necessary for you to wait for the leader to find a place where all the group can pull off, sometimes it’s not possible to find a space big enough, and that might be a while, and it can upset other drivers to get stuck behind a “bunch of old cars” Try to avoid freeway travel unless you have an overdrive and can safely keep up with the traffic. When touring as a group on a 2 lane highway, leave enough space between you and the vehicle in front of you to allow other vehicles to pass one vehicle at a time easily. Be careful not to crowd the vehicle in front of you. [ I know its hard to stay back on a hill when you have more power, but do it anyway} Always keep track of the vehicle behind you, especially when you make a turn! If everyone makes sure the vehicle behind them knows which way to go, you don’t have to wait for the whole group, it will help prevent backups at intersections. When you are the tour leader for a group, stop often, have preplanned potty stops, and meeting places with enough room for the size of the group. Make sure everyone knows ahead of time, where the stops will be, and how long it will take to get to the next stop. When the group is very large it may be better to break up into smaller groups of 5 or 6 instead of one large group, this would depend on the area and route. When it is necessary to travel the freeway with a group be sure everyone knows what exit you are taking. Travel in the right lane when there is 2 or 3 lanes. When the freeway has 4 or more lanes travel in the #3 lane [or the one next to the lane used for entrance & exit] so other vehicles can get on and off the freeway easily. In the event of a vehicle break down, be sure there is enough room for you to safely stop to help. Sometimes its better to let 1 person stop, when room is a problem, and everyone else go down the road until there is room for everyone to wait.

If we all wave often, blow your horn, smile at other drivers, and follow these guide lines while touring, I GUARANTEE you will find more friendly drivers on your next tour!
